Flying within the US:
Adult passengers (18 and over) are required to show a valid U.S. federal or state-issued photo ID in order to fly.
Occasionally passengers arrive at the airport without an ID, due to lost items or inadvertently leaving them at home. Not having an ID does not necessarily mean you won’t be allowed to fly. If you are willing to provide additional information, there are other means of substantiating someone’s identity. The process does take longer and may include additional screening, so allow yourself plenty of time at the airport.
Acceptable Forms of Identification:
Driver’s License or REAL ID: If you are flying solely within the US, you can present either a Driver’s License or a REAL ID. The REAL ID started in Iowa in January 2013, and it is in response to the REAL ID Act of 2005 which was passed by Congress to ensure our safety from terrorism and to help with boarder control. A REAL ID requires more documentation to prove your identity, but otherwise it is very similar to a regular Driver’s License.

(Feel free to make REAL ID a link and/or word that differently, the information is from the Iowa DOT)
Passport Book or Card: In order to travel internationally you will need to have a passport. There are two different types of passports that you can get, either a book or a card. The Passport Card is cheaper and smaller, but you can only travel across the US boarders by car or boat with this. If you want to fly out of the US, you will need to have a Passport Book. Apply for a passport well in advance of your trip. Processing times will vary, but allow approximately 2-4 months. For more information contact the County Recorder’s Office.
When you are flying outside the US, make sure that your passport is valid for at least 3-6 months from your return date. Each country has different requirements, so please be sure to look at that and let us know if it is close!
Travel Visa: International destinations sometimes require a visa in order to get into the country. Some visa’s can be bought at the airport or border upon arrival and others must be done in advance. Siouxland Travel can advise you if a country requires a visa for entry and assist you in the application process (they can be quite tedious). Enter your information below to find out if you need a visa to your destination!
